French verses in the autograph of Thomas Gray / with translation and a note by Samuel Clegg [18th century].

Manuscript, in two hands, of two pages of verses, in French, in an 18th-century hand, followed by a photocopy of a handwritten copy of Gray's poem, Elegy written in a country churchyard, underneath an engraving of Stoke Poges Church, Buckinghamshire. These items are followed by a handwritten transcription of the French verses in a later hand, interleaved with an English translation, and then an essay on the influence of contemporary French verse on the poetry of Thomas Gray. The essay discusses Gray's European tour with Horace Walpole; transcribes part of a letter written by Gray which describes his attendance at a ballet in France titled the Ballet de la Paix; and links the ballet to the stanza in the manuscript's French poem labeled "Ballet de la Paix." The volume also includes an engraved portrait of Thomas Gray.
